Three easy ways to juice an orange without peeling
One of them is also the best way to juice pomegranates.
It is such a satisfying feeling when an orange peel is so loose it practically peels itself. On the other hand, you never know when that perfect looking orange will have a peel that feels like it's been attached with super glue. You can always use a knife to cut the peel off, squeeze it by hand, or use a standard electric citrus juicer. But here are some ways to juice unpeeled oranges that you might not have known about.
1. Amco's hand citrus squeezers
In the hot summer months, we've been making a lot of frozen orange vanilla smoothies. And this is our go-to gadget for getting orange juice fast. Amco makes them in four sizes - lime, lemon, orange, and a lemon/lime combo. They are made from solid cast aluminum, are simple to use and clean, and are wonderfully inexpensive. Just make sure not to make the same mistake a lot of people make with this and put the orange in peel down. It seems counter-intuituve since the half orange fits perfectly peel down, but that will cause the rind to be peeled and make bitter juice.
2. A citrus juicer attachment for your existing slow juicer
We were surprised that nobody ever thought of this before: making a simple attachment to use your vertical juicer's motor drive a citrus squeezer. This handy add-on attaches to a Sana 808 or Omega VSJ-843 - two of the most popular vertical juicers out there - to convert them into an elecctric citrus juicer. Just remove the juicing bowl and put this gadget in it's place, and you have a powerful and simple citrus juicer.
3. Manual citrus press
Solid and heavy (around 10 kilograms!), these cast iron monsters are designed for anyone who needs to make large quantities of orange juice quickly. Operating on the same principal as the Amco hand press, the Sana Citrus Press uses a sturdy rubber-handled lever and base to provide enough leverage to get the last drop of juice out of any citrus fruit. It also has a big surprise up its sleeve: this juicer is hands-down the best way to juice pomegranate. You don't have to pick out pomegranate seeds or try to peel them - just cut them in half and pull the lever.
